Such a beautiful raptor and a great eater. Adult Great Horned Owls will eat one to two rats every day and when nesting they will eat more and they will feed more too. Please be thoughtful about using poison to kill rats and mice. After eating it, they become lethargic and easy prey for a raptor. The problem is that poison is ingested, and has to be eaten. If a rat eats poison, and something eats the rat, it gets poisoned too. this carries over to Owls, Hawks, Eagles, Bobcats, and anything else that might grab a rat for a meal.
